Andy,

What your boss wants is important and any issue important enough to her to take up your time is important--no matter how non-technical the topic is.

I and my partner had a similiar problem. We are building an app for a sales orginization which looks is THE ONLY thing that matters. The little stuff to them is data input, generarting reports, finding the data, etc. We had a big controversey on our colors and graphics. To get us out of it we set the color in the base classes through variables(we read from an INI file), and set the color to what the boss wanted. We then set up classes to display graphics and drawings anb a free table to place the file names and path. We then showed them to all concerned, showed them how to change the colors and graphics, and explained that in the app everyone will be able to change the colors and graphics to suit themseleves. The arguing is still going on but we are no longer involved in meeteings. A secondary benefit is that they are even more consumed with the color issue now that they have 16 million colors to chose from, they don't have time to "help us".
