We could use a lot more information to help you here - a code sample would be a good start, plus some idea of your environment - NT Server, Novell, W9x, etc.

Depending on what you're doing, you might need to look at:
FLUSH
Data Buffering
Locking Functions e.g. RLOCK(), FLOCK()
NOFILTER clause on SELECT - SQL
