I haven't figured out what is causing it yet, but my cable connection spontaneously drops from time to time, and cannot be reinitiated with just a request. I have a batch file that forces windows to get another IP address from the 'server' with just 2 lines:
IPCONFIG /release
IPCONFIG /renew
