This is not exactly the answer on your question, but it may help. See my inp_list (in UT Files section) and the example, I provided, to decide, if you can grab some ideas. Basically, I want to suggest you to create a class based on container for this. It would be textbox+listbox. The user will type in textbox and a record pointer would jump to nearest zip in listbox.
