Put simply...you don't.

The old way (or something like I used to do), was for the user to hit a specified keystroke from the browse window which would bring up a screen with edit boxes for the editable memos for that record.

Now, it's a little easier. Use a grid. In the memo fields, you can capture mouse clicks, keystrokes..whatever to control how the user can edit the memo fields.
