According to the registry entry, the ActiveX uses "Apartment" threading model. The control does have status methods, but the documentation is poor and I've already waited 2 weeks for answers for the 3rd party. I get flakey results where in previous tests it takes 3:22 (mm:ss) to complete the processing of the data, but after 10 minutes I'm still getting a status of Active or Waiting. In addition, there is a method called ShutDown() that is suppossed to halt any backround threads. It doesn't.

Well, maybe I'll get an answer from the company that will resolve my problems.
