What can cause records in a DBF to get hieroglyphic garbage in them?

I have some users of my application that are experiencing this problem. 2 different users sent me a CD with their DBFs on it. By browsing these table, I see that there are a few records that contain garbage data.

Where should I start looking for a problem? Could this be related to hardware or software?
