No. It uses font settings specified by the user in Display settings.
As for "rolling our own" message boxes, there are times it is necessary. However, I try to stay away from it looking like the Windows message box because then our application starts to behave differently than other Windows applications. If you need to display messages that just don't work in a MessageBox, make a modal dialog that looks different. Don't use the standard message box symbols.
