>I need to know how to calculate how much network trafic is generated by VFP opening (and working with) talbes over a LAN / WAN. When I open a table with an order does VFP transfer entire index over network? If not entire index, how much? When I do a select will VFP transfer other indexes over the network to try and optimize the expression? Again, all or some? Do local views generate less network trafic? How do I calculate required bandwidth to get a certain performance given a set of tables with a specific amount of data? How do I calculate the performance give a specific bandwidth and set of tables with a specific amount of data?

This is a tall order, perhaps why no replies yet. There is no "formula" AFAIK for this sort of thing. VFP does not move the entire CDX over the wire, that much is assured. It brings what it needs depending on the circumstances, basically. On a LAN, there is very little problem no matter what, usually. On a WAN or RAS, it's another story, and good indexing can make a huge difference.

In addition to testing in your exact environment, for which there is no real substitute, the May 99 FPA article by Chris Probst on Rushmore is helpful. Also Charlie Schreiner did a nice paper on this subject, "Outfoxed" which has some more useful info. Perhaps this will help get you started a little...
