Rather than feel like a complete idiot by answering my own question, I decided to feel like a partial one by posting this here.

Early versions of some of the ActiveX controls have bugs which cause the control not to behave as documented. An example of this is the CommonDialogs control's Open dialog's FilterIndex property not returning a correct value as described in the documentation.

To determine if your controls are the earlier versions, you can check by right clicking on the OCX file in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and selecting properties, then the version tab. In my case, the COMDLG32.OCX Version number was 1.0.2415, and dated 8/21/96.

To upgrade, go to:

http://www.microsoft.com/vbasic/controls/download/default.htm

This is the Site Builder Network. In order to download, you'll have to register, if you have not already. You may register as a guest. After doing this, go to the Guest Download page, and select: Visual Basic 5.0 Control Creation Edition. At this point, you'll have to logon with your user name (supplied by the registration) and password. The file (vb5ccein.exe) is approximately 7.1 Mb. Once this file is downloaded, run it to update your OCX files. Afterwards, COMDLG32.OCX Version number was 5.00.3714, dated 2/27/97.

I've only played with it a bit, but the installation came off without a hitch and everything in VFP was updated properly. The only thing that I've checked so far is the above mentioned FilterIndex property, and it works.

Supposedly, this program will allow you to create ActiveX controls from within VFP, but I have no way (without trying it) to know for certain.

The only downside that I'm aware of is that the new help file is not supplied. I'm still searching for a source for that. However, if the controls are now working as described in the one supplied with VFP, that isn't too big of a deal.
