With anything, it depends on the application. If this is an in-house type thing, and the users are all aware of it, I guess that's a different situation. Just make sure none of them have heart conditions. :) If I knew my volume was muted and the program suddenly beeped loudly at me, I'd jump out of my skin...

The user does not want to have a messagebox or anything like that coming up and interrupting entry. However, what I want is to play a warning sound to alert them that a duplicate was detected. In many cases the duplicates are legitimate and stopping the user every time would be extremely annoying for them. I would want to only be sure that the sound could be heard and then set the volume back to what it was. This may seem odd, but "The user is always right" :)
