Don't know any way to disable it... it's the downside of today's wickedly fast video cards!
However, make sure she knows that if she clicks between the thumbnail and the top/bottom of the scrollbar it'll move the list up/down one "page" at a time. A lot of surprisingly experienced Windows users don't know this.
