If you search the message base here, on Automation with Word, or something to that effect, you find a wealth of info. There are some samples that come with VFP that show how to automate Word / Excel.
Otherwise, 90% of the literature on the subject uses Visual Basic. However, once you learn enough VB to translate to VFP, witch isn't that difficult, you'll be on your way.

Automation is a Microsoft technology, that to my knowledge the folks at Corel have not bought into. So I would not expect Word Perfect to work well in this scenario.

>So I have this application that transfers files from a host to remote machine. The remote app then processes the documents into the proper places and creates database entries for each one. The remote machine also acts as a user interface. The documents are Word Perfect 5.1 in nature. I need to use Word or WP8 to resave the files in a 32 bit format as well as print them. Im not extremely familiar with automation- and none of the material I've read so far has been very comprehensive on the subject of use code to manipulate Word for example to do what I need it to do. Does anyone know of any great books on the subject? Or any resource material that might help.
