This has little to do with native Windows controls... Access uses Bitmap controls, as well, yet I don't think they have more problems with ActiveX controls than VB. And most Microsoft applications don't use native Windows controls, neither. The Word option dialog, for example, consists of one Window that covers the entire pageframe, and the RTF control is used for the textbox in combo controls. Everything else is painted, too.
