Want to have fun with someone? Challenge them to name a single application that is non-data. It can't be done. By strict definition, variables, constants, objects, etc. are all data. I got into this one time with a developer in a language that will remain unmentioned (rhymes with TP), and he claimed he wrote no applications that involved data.

I completely agree with the rest of what you posted. You definitely want to avoid roundtripping the data. But that involves a pretty good knowledge of ADO and/or SQL Server and that's something that a lot of VFPers don't have.

As far as data replication goes, all the more reason why to use other tools like SQL-Server. IMO, data belongs on the server, and only a minimal amount should be returned to the client...
