VBA has gotten a lot better. There's not much you can't do in VBA that you couldn't do in VB6. And you can always code COM add-ins in VB to do that.

I think Access is much, much more capable than it was. There is a world of difference between Access 2000 and 97.

I still use VFP. I would use VFP instead of Access in a situations where client/server was not needed. VFP still runs rings around vanilla Access with MDBs. If a server database is really needed, either will work but Access is much mroe integrated with SQL Server than VFP is from a developer's standpoint.
