I would suggest that using a framework will provide structure to make your design easier. It will be possible to write your app without a framework, but you might find 6 months from now that you need a component that requires extensive re-engineering of your existing code.

A framework will also help a development team work from a standard. If you're the only developer, then you can 'wing it' - but if you're working with others, you'll have to be extra explicit about details that would be obvious within the framework.

The term "framework" doesn't necessarily have to be a third-party design. In the loosest sense, a framework is just a conceptual plan that you flesh-out with code in top down development. If you're going to develop an application for years, it would be wise to have that conceptual plan anyway.
