I'm pretty sure you'll need Wordperfect 9 from the Wordperfect Office 2000 version to use automation (I just looked in the help and there's piles of stuff about using VBA macros). I had thought the previous Win versions of WP did not support automation and you have to use DDE (I've never done it myself, but have seen posts about it).
IAC, you could probably do it all in WP. Even the DOS 5.1 version has a built-in macro language. I've written any recently, but it is pretty powerful.

BTW, I think all the WP classes are different from the Word counterparts, so you'll have to look them all up in the WP help to translate David's code over.
