Hi Erik --

>Do you really not know what words are not acceptable?
>In what part of the world?

Give me a break.

Are you truly that ignorant, that you're not aware social standards vary geographically? Sometimes quite dramatically?

>Seems to me that if we use a list, people will just find offensive words that aren't on the list.
>
>Seems to me that folks find offense wherever they choose to look. Big world out there, Erik. Time to adjust to reality.

There is close to full consensus here on what sorts of threads are out of place. It is a big world, but look at all of the flags of people who have spoken out against trash talking on a technical board. Our values don't differ as much as you would have us think.

Values differ. Degree is variant.

>Consider this: the list contains the word a**. Do I get kicked off for saying something like "I made an a** of my self"?
>
>Dunno. The BBOFT contains that word, too, right? WWJD?
>

Lost me there. I don't know what these acronyms are.

BBOFT = Big Book Of Fairie Tales
WWJD = What Would Judas Do (or so I'm told)

>And so on and so forth. The very existence of a 'list' implies that any language not on the list is fair game.
>
>You're catching on mighty quick, Erik.

Even in courtrooms, there is such a thing as the spirit of the law. It means that if a law's intention is understood, purposely underminining that intention, even if your action is not specifically spelled out in the law, is illegal. The rules and guidelines here are not laws, but like all other rules and guidelines, they require a measure of cooperation and good faith to be successful. Any person who takes it upon himself to undermine the goals and standards of the majority can do so without breaking any literal rules, but he's still a bad citizen.

Really long-winded way to say, "I know it when I see it.", eh?

>Why is it necessary to test the boundaries just for kicks?
>
>Yeah, dirty job, ain't it? Freedom isn't free, m'boy.

Joining the discussions on a board for the sole purpose of seeing how fast you can get kicked off is your prerogative.

What makes you think that's why I'm here? (You're wrong, of course, but I'm curious as to why.)

I just hope that you are clear on your motives when you do so.

Why?

I think its unfair to punish an entire community because of your beef with one individual who called you a name in a conversation with somebody else.

No one called me a name. What's your beef?

>Remember this is a technical board; there are plenty of places to vent and do all the insulting and cussin' you want.
>
>The only technical posts I've seen here could easily be classified as "Blasts" by many.

Maybe this is because you are not looking for technical material, only dry kindling to which to apply your match.

Cites?

Later... Karl
