If he's referring to a Fox table on a Linux platform, all that should be needed is a way to "see" the LINUX filesystem as a mapped or UNC drive, using as you said, Samba, an NFS arrangement, or one of several UNIX-side utilities that expose the filesystem as a SMB-style share.
I have used that kind of arrangement to talk to FP/UNIX 2.6 tables on SCO from FP/DOS and VFP on the NT network, although I've not tried through ODBC yet.
