My guess is that it's because north america isn't the only place in the world where those appliances are used. Daylight savings time isn't an international thing. A lot of people would by annoyed at having to live with an appliance that's off by an hour every 6 months.

They could have an internal backup battery. It wouldn't be too hard to sell this devices with a 5yr lithium battery built in.
