I assume you are using a view for the grid. It could be terribly slow to index the table just to sort the grid. If so, add the index tags to the view for the grid when the form first loads. When the user wants to sort, you probably have a way to indicate which sort order and to indicate descending / ascending. Whatever interface you have, use the command SET ORDER TO TAG ASCENDING / DESCENDING.
