Thanks for your feedback. I may have mistyped the last line. I looked further into this ver the weekend and found that the problem I was having was due to dBase compatability (SET COMPATABILITY) being ON. The example I gave was also misleading, that last segment should have been specifically assigning the value to the latest element, not all, It assigns to the latest in the working code.
