Here in the files section there is an article that compares the two.

255 users may be the limit (don't know for sure) but many Access authors (quoting from Allison Balter's book on Access) say performance degradation can start at as low as 5 concurrent users.

As far as splitting, it is recommended that you always do it on multiuser apps.
