I'm going to read between the lines here a bit and guess that what you're after is;

Column 1 contains the descriptive text for the user
Column 2 contains the identifier for the system

Instead of setting the column width, try this.

Set the column count to 1 and the bound column property to 2. Your combo will show the description, but will store the identifier.
