I have had problems in the past when I used just an IP address to connect with the Enterprise Manager. If I remeber correctly, SQL Server had trouble with authenitication when editing the databases or scheduling jobs. I corrected this by adding the NT name to my Hosts file with the appropriate IP address and then connected using the NT name.
