Larry,

This hosts file is the same one I was referring to. Raptor firewalls also use it, for example.

Thanks...

Best,

DD

>Hi Doug,
>No, when I refer to the hosts file, it's the HOSTS file in the System32\drivers\etc directory of my NT directory. MS installs a sample Hosts file named Hosts.Sam. It is used to resolve names to IP addresses before your system accesses your configured DNS. I use it to configure IP address translations that I know I will need but may not be available from my DNS server (e.g. IP addresses on our local LAN).

This part is new to me and I'm looking forward to learning how this works. Just downloaded some of the PIX manual for a little 'spare time reading'. <g>

>>>I have had problems in the past when I used just an IP address to connect with the Enterprise Manager. If I remeber correctly, SQL Server had trouble with authenitication when editing the databases or scheduling jobs. I corrected this by adding the NT name to my Hosts file with the appropriate IP address and then connected using the NT name.
Best,
