So that was my next step was to open the doc straight out of Word. Of course I couldn't edit it there either. The problem was the way it was being saved. I was using this:

oWord.ActiveDocument.SaveAs("54947.doc",0,.T.,"",.T.,"",.F.,.F.,.F.,.F.,.F.)

Now I use this:

oWord.ActiveDocument.SaveAs("54947.doc")

Of course you told me this about two weeks ago and I had forgotten. I went through some previous chat and came upon a previous comfab we had on the saving issue.
