Now wait, I think it's a sport, but not in the truest definition. By your definition then are machanic athletes because they work on cars? - surely not.
When I think of a classic example of sport auto racing is far from it. I think more of track field (100 meter dash, marathons, hammer throw etc...), football, baseball, hockey, tennis, basketball etc.... In other words, activity that is not aided by motors or any other machine power.
