Hi John,
>This is not exactly a Foxpro issue but what is the best way to enable remote users to access a VFP app?
>Currently my company runs a DOS app under Novell and use PCAnywhere for DOS for remote control but will be converting to NT Server 4.0 and VFP converted app. My budget won't allow for upgrade of all the remote control machines in order to support the remote users.
This is a perfect scenario for a Web based application with a browser interface. By moving to this
interface you remove the need for special client software by using a generic browser to access the
application. The economics of distributed access in this manner alone make this solution an
obvious contender...
OTOH, it will require rebuilding your user interface so that it can run over the Web using an
HTML front end. Web based applications are really server applications rather than 'interactive'
UI applications that we're typically used to when using tools such as VFP. However, it sounds
like you're planning on moving to a new interface anyway (DOS->VFP) so building your code
in such a manner that the User Interface is separated from the data interface would allow you
to build the application so that it can run in either environment, reusing most of your application
logic and business rules.
