What I meant to say was that the black on grey is deemed, I presume, to be the least offensive (while avoiding the glare of black on bright white) and has thus assumed "standard" status.

I am certainly not preaching against the user selecting their own - but suggesting the reason why the usual color combination is balck on grey. The user can then have the option to change them to what they want. I have one user whose preference is for dark blue on vibrant purple, my favourite is dark blue on very pale lemon yellow.

Incidentally, how do you control the background color of buttons. This has probably been asked a million times but while I wait for my premeier membership to be processed and I can search for these things I will risk asking the obvious.
