You might be right. I'm giving the idea a bit more thought. It might just be a new trick for an old dog. I'm much more comfortable with lcName = "John Q. Public", but the object might be the best solution.

However, I have a problem with the code, or at least VFP does. It doesn't like this line:

loName = CREATE("Variable","John Q. Public")

It says "Class definition 'variable' not found. Would I have to define a class called "variable"?

Up to you, of course, but that's really sort of the whole point of using an object oriented tool, isn't it? Also, objects are really useful, and work well for doing exactly the type of thing you are trying for.
