I agree. Usually the only time I do this is to call a person's attention to a particularly pertinent comment I'm making that somehow involves them -- if that person has not contributed to the thread recently, indicating that they may not be actively following the thread at the moment.

However, I usually would handle that by responding to one of that person's earlier messages anyway.
