Depends where you are....

Benefits are generally not an issue. If you're a 1099 contractor, that's your responsibility. If they want to W-2 you, then that's a salary issue, different subject altogether.

In Boston, a contractor can get anywhere from $45 to $125/hr, depending on the complexity of the project and how well the contractor can support the project.
Generally, if you're on your own, then $45 to $60 is the norm. If you can provide a team of programmers and promise decent response to tech support calls, then you're talking in the $75 to $110 range. Also keep in mind that as a contractor, you only charge for the time you actually spend working. Lunch, other breaks, phone calls to other clients, personal phone calls are on your dime.

I would assume that San Antonio would be about 15 to 25% less. But I'm guessing. Boston is one of the more expensive places.
