When you say modify or open, is this from the Windows Explorer, or from within VFP? Does the .DBC contain any stored procedures and/or triggers? If so, has the DBC been modified by a different version of VFP recently?

I'd try to see if the DBC itself is recognizable - you should be able to open it as a table with the USE command from within VFP>
