Well, my information is nearly two years old, but my $.02:

I used MapInfo from ESRI (www.esri.com). They have (had?) a fully functioning demo version that you can use for about 3 months. If you don't need geocoding, there's a fairly cheap lite version.

I looked at MapX and found that tech support refused to help anyone using it with VFP. No one on their message boards was using VFP. When I asked for VFP help, I was told I should look at MapInfo.

There are a few people on the UT who have used MapInfo, and with their help I learned enough to get started and from there it was pretty easy.
