Is there a way to use SQL Pass through to select the Remote Database using a DataSource instead of creating a temporary Database and using CREATE CONNECTION command?

I know if the ODBC connection is created properly to point to the Database this is not a problem. However, if the DBA did not select a Default Database is there a way to select it knowing the name of the database as in CREATE CONNECTION?
