John,
>For many VFP developers however, I think the book is a good investment. If it helps you solve one problem, I suppose you could make the argument that the purchase price was worth it. However, could the problem have been solved through the MSDN KB? Maybe that is irrelevant, I don't know...
For me the real value has been as a cross-check on the help file content when dealing with an unfamiliar command that doesn't work as I think it should. Several times I've discovered my answer in HG, making it pay for itself quickly.
For COM/DCOM or web-related things, it doesn't add value.
>I am amazed at the number of folks who don't utilized MSDN on the web. It is free and is one of the best resources out there.
I agree. I am amazed at the number of people posting questions here on the UT, who obviously have not looked in the MSDN Library. One of the best decisions I made recently was to do a complete Library install on disk at my three development locations. I also use the web version when on the road. It has become invaluable to me since I actually began using it.
