I see them as compliments as opposed to substitutes. Articles allow for the illustration of the applying of an idea, a mini-case study if you will. Of course, this does not mean an article that is largely conceptual is of no value. I think it is safe to say that as a matter of course, that while we can get our theory from a variety of sources, the practical application of that theory is most readily available in magazine/web articles, and if you take it a bit further, online forums and discussion groups..
