You might be right. Indexnodes of numeric data and numeric data in character fields might be exactly the same, so VFP cannot distinguish numeric and character indexnodes other than checking the index expression.

However integer indexes are stored in another format, so it looks as if this behaviour is by design, to keep consistency with numeric indexes.
