I use Kodak Imaging ActiveX controls, which comes for free in Windows 98 box. They work like a charm. Comprehensive documentation in PDF format can be downloaded from www.eastmensoftware.com website (look in support link). The website has excellent samples written in VB.
As Benn said, you may save file on disk and have only file path, file name and page number (for multipage images) in the table.
