What are your combos bound to? It sounds like you don't have a valid option in whatever your controls are bound to when the form instanciates. That would cause them to be blank until you select something. If I've got a combo bound to a property on a form or bizobj I'll normally "preset" the control right after it's been displayed or updated. What I mean by that is I'll grab the first entry (usually in the view that the RowSource in the combo is tied to) and save that value in the property so that I know the control source of the combo is valid.
