I use the free Altavista ISP sometimes.

>1. Do you need special access software

Yes. But it is just a small program that you click. It displays a banner ad that hangs around for your entire session and then dials the altavista via a special dialup networking connection that is created during the software install. You can't connect directly to the isp by clicking the dial-up networking. You must do it via their software.

> and does that interfere with any other preconfigured dial-up access with other ISPs?

No. It just adds it own dial-up networking connection. It even works side-by-side with my pay ISP with no probs.

>2. Can you access e-mail accounts other than those of the free ISP?

I couldn't access my pay ISP pop email. I would imagine that is typical.

>3. Realistically, can you get a connection at the local access number(s)?

Yes. I have never got a busy signal with the two Vancouver number yet. Either during the day or evening.

>4. Any other limitations/restrictions/gotchas/comments?

Nope, only the banner add that is always on top. It isn't too annoying if you either have a 17 inch monitor or modify your browser to have only small icons on the toolbar. Oh... it won't go to your default home page, it goes to altavista's when it starts. But you can click the browser "home" button to get your normal home page.

I have been impressed with the Altavista service. No disconnects, the speed is okay.
