Your technique will satisfy the customer, I hope, but you might also set the length of the field to 'n' of the longer letters (as you did) and then set the input mask so the user can't enter more letters even if he is typing 'i' or 't'. That way all but "WWWWW" will show completely but the user can't type more than the field will store.
