I use the HiLow key approach where a unique key is generated by the server at application startup, then subsequent keys are generated by concatenating it with a key generated by the client. This way you only have to make one trip to the server for a primary key. I always stirve to minimize the number of round trips to the server in my applications for performance reasons.
