Yikes but thanks for the blow by blow. I guess in some ways I may be naive, having travelled in very different 3rd world environments; obviously, it's as different as '1st world' so to speak. My danger in cluelessly but cheerfully tromping around, say, Sendero Luminoso dominated villages in the Peruvian is probably not nearly as high as what you're talking about; even folk of that persuasion will usually only kill you if there is a geo-political point to be made, while in endemically corrupt countries, you can get killed for anything, starting with that dollar in your wallet. Of course, I'm still glad I cheerfully agreed to give the little old lady who had woven this really beautiful blanket who was sitting under the outsized posters of Mao and Ho an extra 10 bucks when her son suggested it!
