This has been a great thread to read - I ran into a similar problem a while back. I just couldn't figure out why it wouldn't update in the form. Finally I gave up and went to updating each individual table wrapped in a transaction, which it sounds like you're doing.

Is there a reason why this would be bad? Is it considered back technique to update all the tables in a transaction and update directly, rather than updating the view? I guess this could become an issue with remote views.
