>I use JPG images, and this is actually not my choice but choice of my client who claims to have experience in the area. Generally JPG size is 10 times less (depending on quality/compression) than corresponding BMP.
A second alternative is GIF. It's files are slightly larger than JPG's (about 10 to 15%), but they are read quicker by most applications. A JPG is two-tiered which requires two passes to fully evaluate the file. The plus side is that JPG offers a preview by looking at it after the first pass (lower resolution).
I personally prefer JPG's b/c there seems to be a more consistent quality of resolution.
