Thought I would start a new thread regarding the merits of the above languages. There seems to be a lot of disucssion of various language pros/cons with the advent of the impending new VFP 7 release.

In the near future I will be able to use a large UNIX box for web development. Since neither VFP or VB run on UNIX/Linux I am probably
going to learn to program in Java.

What are the reasons to learn or not learn one of the languages?
What are some other languages choices that run applications on both UNIX and NT servers? I have listed some minor pros and cons for each. I'm sure there are may others out there. Your thoughts?

VFP:
Pros - been around long time, OOP, data centric
Cons - Windows only, not as widely used as VB

VB:
Pros - large number of developers, M$ favorite, VBA used in Office
Cons - Windows only, not data centric

Java
Pros - OOP, platform independent, widely used on the Net
Cons - immature language, not data centric
