I'm not fully versed on the details, but doesn't transaction processing lock the records being updated during the transaction? If so, you could quickly check for updates within the transaction, and if there is one, just rollback and inform the user. I've read that transaction processing locks the records being updated, so I guess the question is, does it lock all the records for the entire transaction? If so, I'd think you'd be alright doing that.
